What is a pilgrimage?

In the simplest of terms, it is praying with your feet. It is a journey to a holy, sacred place that ushers a pilgrim into the presence of God; a contemporary quests for ancient wisdom.

Throughout the world, pilgrims move invisibly in huge numbers among the tourists of today, indistinguishable from them except in purpose. Although a tourist and pilgrim may be on the same outward journey, the pilgrim also journeys inward to experience the spirituality of place (capturing and instilling a sense of God’s presence from places), spiritual transformation, and renewal.

Pilgrimage is an important part of the spiritual journey for many Christians. Christians see life itself as a journey, coming from God and returning to God. The pilgrim seeks to separate from the everyday concerns of the world, and to spend time in the presence of God as he/she travels to a place of special meaning. When a pilgrim walks the exterior landscape, it is the sights that lead to interior insights.

As a pilgrim on this pilgrimage, you will have the opportunity to experience all this and more. Even though you will be with a group, your internal journey may be different from your fellow pilgrims’. A spiritual director is available to guide you and minister to you as you make this pilgrimage.
